What determines the calorie content of borscht?
The key variables are the amount of meat, the richness of the broth, the sour cream, and the sautéed vegetable base. Meatless borscht made with vegetable broth contains about 45 kcal per 100 g; borscht with beef and sour cream has around 91 kcal; and a version with pork belly and a generous sautéed base can reach up to 130 kcal.
Borsch for weight loss
A 320-kcal bowl of borscht provides about 16% of the recommended daily intake and is very filling thanks to its volume and fiber content. If you need to lower the calorie count, cut back on the sautéed vegetable base and sour cream first - not the meat, as protein is what actually keeps you feeling full.
How we arrive at our rating
We treat borscht not as a single dish, but in terms of its components: broth, vegetables, meat, sour cream, and oil. Therefore, in the app, a bowl containing two spoonfuls of sour cream and no potatoes will be calculated differently than the average value from the table.
