What determines the calorie content of shawarma?
Three factors matter most: the size of the flatbread, the amount of sauce, and the type of meat. A mayonnaise-based garlic sauce adds about 110 kcal per serving; swapping it for tomato sauce eliminates nearly 80 kcal without compromising the flavor of the filling.
How to fit shawarma into your daily calorie allowance
With a standard daily intake of 1,980 kcal, a standard shawarma accounts for about 29% of the day's total - which is reasonable for a substantial lunch. The easiest way to balance it out is by adding vegetables and opting for a light dinner, rather than giving up the dish entirely.
Why is the score lower than borscht's?
A score of 58 is the result of two factors: a lack of fiber and vegetables, and a moderate level of processing in the lavash and sauce. The protein content, however, is rated highly. The score doesn't rule out the dish; rather, it suggests adding vegetables and whole grains to your diet that day.
