FoodMate Score of the food

This is a score for the food on its own, by its composition per 100 g, using the same formula the app applies to a meal. On a plate with other foods the result will differ: buckwheat with vegetables scores higher than buckwheat alone.

How many calories are in 100 g of beef

Beef calories depend on the cut. Medium-fat meat, the kind usually bought for soup and goulash, is about 187 kcal per 100 g: 18.9 g of protein and 12.4 g of fat. Lean tenderloin is about 142 kcal, shoulder and rump 160-180, brisket and ribs with fat 250-300. A 150 g serving of raw meat is 281 kcal and 28 g of protein.

Boiled and braised beef

Boiled beef loses about a third of its weight: 150 g of raw meat gives about 100 g boiled. So 100 g of boiled beef has about 220 kcal, even though the piece gained no calories. Braised beef is about 232 kcal per 100 g, and more if braised with oil and flour as in goulash. The broth takes away a little fat, but that barely affects the calories of the meat.

Steak and patties

A 250 g ribeye steak with marbling is about 550-600 kcal, a lean tenderloin steak about 355. In the pan the meat loses water, and a finished steak comes to about 250 kcal per 100 g. Beef patties are higher in calories than the meat itself, because the mince contains fat, and the patties get bread and frying oil.

Beef for weight loss

Beef gives plenty of protein and what chicken lacks: iron, zinc and vitamin B12. A 150 g serving covers more than a day of B12 and almost half of the daily zinc. In a deficit it is handier to choose lean cuts like tenderloin, rump or shoulder and to boil, braise or roast them without oil. Fatty marbled beef tastes better but has almost twice the calories.

How to count your serving

Weigh the meat before cooking and multiply by 1.87 for medium-fat meat or by 1.42 for tenderloin. If the beef is in soup, goulash or with a side, take a photo in MyFoodMate AI: the app counts the calories of the whole dish.
