This is a score for the food on its own, by its composition per 100 g, using the same formula the app applies to a meal. On a plate with other foods the result will differ: buckwheat with vegetables scores higher than buckwheat alone.

How many calories are in chicken thigh

Chicken thigh meat with skin has about 185 kcal per 100 g: 16.8 g of protein and 13 g of fat. Without skin it is about 121 kcal, almost like breast, only juicier. One bone-in thigh weighs 130-180 g and has about 110 g of meat, which is 204 kcal with skin or 133 without. The bone is 20-25% of the thigh, so if you weigh a whole thigh, take three quarters of the weight.

Thigh with and without skin

The main difference is the skin. It holds most of the thigh's fat, and removing it drops the calories from 185 to 121 kcal per 100 g. Skinless boneless thigh fillet is sold ready and works well for kebabs and grilling: it does not dry out like breast. If you bake thighs with skin for the crust, you can take the skin off on the plate.

Baked, boiled and fried thigh

In the oven a skin-on thigh loses water and some of the fat renders out, so the cooked meat comes to about 230 kcal per 100 g. The thigh did not gain calories, it just got lighter. Boiled skinless thigh is about 150 kcal. Pan-fried with skin about 250: oil is added to its own fat. Weighing the meat raw is most accurate.

Thigh or breast

Breast is leaner: 113 kcal against 121 for skinless thigh and 185 with skin. But thigh is tastier, juicier, cheaper and has more iron and zinc. For weight loss skinless thigh works fine: the difference from breast is about 10 kcal per 100 g. Skin-on thighs are better eaten less often or in smaller portions.

How to count your serving

Weigh the raw boneless meat and multiply by 1.85 with skin or by 1.21 without. If the thighs are already baked with potatoes, take a photo in MyFoodMate AI: the app estimates the weight of the meat and the side.
