FoodMate Score of the food

This is a score for the food on its own, by its composition per 100 g, using the same formula the app applies to a meal. On a plate with other foods the result will differ: buckwheat with vegetables scores higher than buckwheat alone.

How many calories are in mozzarella

Fresh mozzarella in brine has about 250 kcal per 100 g: 18 g of protein, 19.5 g of fat and about a gram of carbs. A standard ball weighs 125 g without the brine and gives 313 kcal. Mini balls of 8-10 g are about 25 kcal each, a 25 g slice 63 kcal. The weight on the pack usually includes the brine, and only about half of it is cheese.

Pizza and light mozzarella

Pizza mozzarella is a firm low-moisture block that is grated. It holds less water, so it is higher in calories, about 300 kcal per 100 g. Light reduced-fat mozzarella is about 180 kcal. A 30 cm pizza usually carries 120-150 g of cheese, that is 360-450 kcal from mozzarella alone.

Caprese and salads

A caprese of one mozzarella ball, a large tomato and a tablespoon of olive oil comes to about 478 kcal: cheese 313, oil 135, tomato 30. Shared between two, it is a normal 240 kcal starter. Mini balls in a vegetable salad are easier to count: five of them are about 125 kcal.

Mozzarella and hard cheese

Mozzarella is lighter than hard cheeses: 250 kcal against 350-365 for Russian cheese or Gouda, because it holds more water. It has slightly less protein per 100 g, but noticeably less salt. Fresh mozzarella also has less calcium than hard cheese, but a ball still covers over a third of the daily need. For weight loss mozzarella is handy in salads instead of hard cheese.

How to count your serving

Drain the brine, weigh the cheese and multiply by 2.5, or count by the ball: 313 kcal per 125 g ball. If the mozzarella is on pizza or in a salad, take a photo in MyFoodMate AI and the app counts everything together.
