FoodMate Score of the food
This is a score for the food on its own, by its composition per 100 g, using the same formula the app applies to a meal. On a plate with other foods the result will differ: buckwheat with vegetables scores higher than buckwheat alone.

How many calories are in onion
Raw onion has 41 kcal per 100 g: 1.4 g of protein, about 8 g of carbs and almost 2 g of fiber. A medium peeled onion weighs about 100 g and gives 41 kcal, a small one 25, a large one 62. Red and white onions are almost the same in calories, shallots slightly higher, about 72 kcal per 100 g.
Fried and sautéed onion
In the pan onion loses water and absorbs oil: fried onion comes to about 130 kcal per 100 g, and golden with a lot of oil 150-200. For soups and stews onion is usually sautéed: one onion with a tablespoon of oil is 41 + 135 = 176 kcal for the whole pot. Sauté it with a teaspoon of oil and a couple of spoons of water and it is 86.
Pickled and green onions
Pickled onion for kebabs is about 45 kcal per 100 g, up to 60 if the marinade has sugar. Green onions are lighter than bulb onions: about 20 kcal per 100 g, and a 30 g bunch only 6 kcal. They are rich in vitamins K and C, so greens in a salad are a good addition with almost no calories.
Onion on a diet
Onion itself adds almost nothing to a dish's calories but gives flavor, making vegetables and lean meat easier to enjoy. The only thing to watch is the frying oil. Battered onion rings from fast food are already 350-400 kcal per 100 g.
How to count your serving
Count an onion as 41 kcal and add the frying oil separately. If the onion is already in a dish, take a photo in MyFoodMate AI and the app counts it along with the other foods.
