FoodMate Score of the food
This is a score for the food on its own, by its composition per 100 g, using the same formula the app applies to a meal. On a plate with other foods the result will differ: buckwheat with vegetables scores higher than buckwheat alone.

How many calories are in a spoon of sour cream
15% sour cream has 158 kcal per 100 g: 15 g of fat, 2.6 g of protein and 3 g of carbs. A level tablespoon weighs about 25 g and gives 40 kcal, a heaped one 30-35 g and 50-55 kcal. A teaspoon is about 10 g and 16 kcal. A glass of 15% sour cream is 316 kcal, almost a lunch.
Sour cream 10%, 15%, 20% and 30%
Sour cream calories come almost entirely from fat, so the number rises with the percentage: 10% is 115 kcal per 100 g, 15% is 158, 20% is 204, 25% is 248, 30% is 294. A spoon of 10% sour cream is 29 kcal, 20% is 51, 30% is 74. If you eat sour cream daily, switching from 20% to 10% saves about 20 kcal on every spoon. Sour cream products with vegetable fats are about the same in calories as sour cream of the same fat level.
Sour cream in borscht, salads and with cottage cheese
A spoon of sour cream in a bowl of borscht adds 40 kcal to the 270-300 kcal of the soup itself. Two spoons in a cucumber and tomato salad add 79, and the dressing becomes more caloric than the vegetables. A pack of 5% cottage cheese with a spoon of sour cream is about 258 kcal. Sour cream does not stop weight loss if you mind the spoon size and do not turn your dish white with it.
What to use instead of sour cream
The closest substitute is 2% Greek yogurt: similar tang and thickness with half the calories, 73 kcal per 100 g, and four times the protein. For borscht, plain yogurt or kefir work, for baking 10% sour cream. In baked goods and sauces where fat matters, it is better not to substitute but simply use less.
How to count your serving
Count by spoons: 40 kcal per level tablespoon of 15% sour cream, or weigh it. If the sour cream is already in a bowl of borscht, on pancakes or in a salad, take a photo in MyFoodMate AI and the app counts the calories of the whole dish.
